Millie, 10, sketched her own gingerbread cabin, green walls, red door, a snowman out front and a lit tree inside, and spent three to four days building it. She entered it in the Springville City Gingerbread Contest and took second place, one spot behind her mom.

Two sets of hands

Oehler helped with the technique, the fondant, the tricky bits of construction. The design, the colors, the snowman, all Millie's call.

Why we picked this one

Chloe Oehler builds a hollow tree with hand-painted mouse portraits and a working mailbox, thirty days of work sketched out months in advance. Her daughter built a cabin in three or four days and beat almost everyone in town. The gap between those two projects is the whole point: you don't need the toothpick portraits to get a kid hooked, you need a table, some dough, and permission to pick red for the door.

Flour, water, yeast, salt. Four ingredients. Kid kneads for ten minutes.

Where it happened:

Springville, Utah

There's a gingerbread kit in your pantry closet from three Christmases ago that nobody's opened. Hand it over and don't touch the icing bag.
