Jaymis Dahlin, 9, stacked maple planks in his living room for two hours until a three-foot Easter bunny stood there, no blueprint, the ears giving him the most trouble because they had to lean toward each other just right. He's got somewhere between 800 and 1,000 of the planks at home now, and the family dog still won't go near the bunny.

The parent let it ride

His parents were in the kitchen cooking when he built it. They didn't see any of it happen, they just walked into the living room and found the bunny standing there and Jaymis grinning next to it.

Why we picked this one

Nobody handed him a picture of a bunny to copy. He just started stacking and figured out the ears when he got there, which is the only part of building anything that actually matters.

Wood scraps, glue, nails, whatever's stacked against the garage wall. No kit, no picture to copy, just start piecing pieces onto other pieces and see what it wants to become. Ears optional.

There's a pile of something stackable in your house right now, blocks or boards or whatever's left in the garage. When's the last time you walked into the room and just let it stand there?
