Leighton O'Neal turned 8 in January and told her guests to skip the presents and bring food instead. She and her dad hauled it over to Nourish Up, a Charlotte food nonprofit, and it fed a family for a week.

The yes behind it

Anna and Chris O'Neal didn't talk her into it. They just let her write the invitations the way she wanted and drove her to drop it off, the same as they'd already done for her older sister's birthday.

Why we picked this one

Nobody made Leighton think of this. She just decided, at 8, that she'd rather picture the person on the other end of an empty fridge than open more presents, and her parents' whole job was to not say no. That's the part worth stealing here, not the generosity, the restraint.

Before the pitcher's even mixed, pick the number and the cause together, then post both where the customers can see them. Every cent past the cost of lemons goes out the door, no cut for the stand. When the jar's counted, tell your kid exactly what it bought, the sandwiches, the vet bill, the coat, whatever it was, so the number turns back into a thing.
