For his eighth birthday, a seven-year-old from Tinley Park skipped the party and ran a grocery giveaway in Englewood instead, working the tables with his cousins to reach more than 150 families.

The parent picked up a hammer too

His mother runs a nonprofit called Season to Soar and helped him pull the giveaway together. She says the whole thing started because he once saw a homeless man from the car and couldn't stop to help him.

Why we picked this one

Most seven-year-olds who see something out the car window forget it by the next stoplight. This one didn't, and a year later it turned into folding tables and grocery bags for 150 families. Nobody had to explain to him what to do with that feeling. Somebody just had to help him do it.

Pick a Saturday, pick a food bank, and bring your kid along to work the line, not just drop off a bag at the door. Let them see whose hands the groceries actually land in.
