Nathan, 11, finished his schoolwork one afternoon in Milford and told his mom he was bored. By the end of the day he'd torn apart an old pallet and built his grandma a side table, drawer included, out of scrap wood.
Nobody hovered
Melissa drove him to the hardware store a couple times that day for supplies, then left him alone in the garage. She said she didn't even know a drawer like that could be made from scrap until she saw his.
Why we picked this one
Nathan got his first drill at five, mostly from watching his dad fix things around the farm. Nobody enrolled him in a class. He just had a slow afternoon, a busted pallet, and a garage nobody was using.
Skip the pallet if you want, but not the part where you hand him the drill and walk back inside. Pick something worth building, let him measure it wrong once, and see what he brings you by dinner.
