Ben was 10 when his dad handed him a wrecked Mini and a deadline: have it running by his 16th birthday, in time for prom. Two years and every Tuesday night later, the 12-year-old has learned to weld, strip an engine, and swap panels, and last month he started it up and rolled it out of the garage under its own power for the first time.

Gary didn't do the work for him. He supplied the tools he'd already owned since he was 17, showed up every Tuesday night, and let a ten-year-old grind and weld until it stopped being terrifying.

Why we picked this one

Six years is the kind of timeline that sounds impossible until you break it into Tuesdays. Nobody handed Ben a finished skill, they handed him a deadline and a torch and let the garage do the rest.

Skip the six-year Mini. Hand them the drill instead, name one real thing that needs building, and make them measure twice before they touch the trigger.

Staffordshire, England

Somewhere near you there's a car nobody's touched in years, up on blocks or buried under a tarp. Yours doesn't need six years and a welding torch, just one Tuesday night and a torque wrench.
