What the parent did

His dad had shown him how to fix bikes in the first place, and both parents helped by searching garage sales for donations and supporting his self-set goals without pushing him.

A boy taught himself to repair old, junked bicycles and began fixing them up to give away, eventually providing bikes to an entire boys' home and dozens of other kids in need.

Where it happened:

Saddle Brook, N.J.

Build And Install A Birdhouse

This boy taught himself to fix bikes and gave them away by the dozen — your kid can start with one small build-and-give project this week. Grab some simple wood, build a birdhouse together, and mount it somewhere it can actually help someone or something.
