Drew grew up between Long Island and Manhattan. By 10 he was riding the LIRR and the subway alone. Nobody made a big deal of it. He founded Citizen, earned 14 US patents, and the company sold to EY. He and his wife Whitney raised three kids.
He thinks most kids get handed responsibility too late. So he gave his earlier than felt comfortable, then stayed close and let them figure it out. All three logged 2,000 days outside before they turned 18. None of it required a plan, a budget, or a parenting book. It required believing the kid could handle it, and living with being wrong sometimes.
We gave them real things to do and got out of the way.
